THIRTY-ONE

The bridge door slid open and Taylor stepped through, grabbing onto the frame for support as it thudded into the housing. It had been a full twenty minutes since his experience on the Hedalt warship, and while the military Provost hadn’t actually shot him in the head with a plasma pistol, it certainly felt like she had. It was like someone had removed his brain and played basketball with it for a few minutes, before slam-dunking it back inside his head. Mercifully, the pain had only lasted until he had passed through the starlight door and regained consciousness in his quarters, but while his head no longer hurt, since his simulant body felt no pain, the delirious effects had yet to fully wear off. It was like being drunk without the humorous benefits.

“Finally, there you are,” snapped Sonner, glancing back as Taylor stepped onto the bridge. On the main viewport he could see they were already approaching the mouth of the narrow cave that lead into the lava tube where the Contingency base resided, shielded from the galactic reach of the Fabric and CoreNet. “I’ve been buzzing your quarters for the last ten minutes. Where the hell have you been?”

“Sorry, I guess I overslept,” said Taylor, standing just behind the command chair and resting an elbow on it for support. He didn’t want to get into a discussion with Sonner about what had happened; at least, not yet.

Sonner glanced up at him again, “Rough night, Captain? You look like I feel every morning.”

“You could say that,” Taylor replied, “I’ll fill you in later, Commander.”

Sonner cocked an eyebrow at Taylor and then studied his smooth face and silver eyes for a few seconds, before turning back to the viewport, “Fair enough, Captain, but I’ll hold you to it. No secrets, remember?”

“I remember, Commander, but trust me, now is not the time.”

“You might want to take a seat, Cap,” Casey called out from the pilot’s console; she was peering into her dedicated viewport and controlling the Contingency One on full manual, with the hauler tethered to her every movement. “You’re about to witness me become the first pilot to successfully navigate a lava tube in a cruiser-class ship.”

Taylor made his way over to the tactical station, staggering every third step, and dropped down into the seat. “Actually, you’re not the first to do this,” he said, knowing that his original Casey actually held that honor. But since the Casey sitting in the pilot’s chair was ostensibly the same person, technically she was still correct. “Well, I mean you sort of are, but then it wasn’t really you either. Even though it was.” Sonner and Casey both looked at him like he’d gone mad.

“You alright, Cap?” said Casey, in a way that suggested she thought he wasn’t. “Did you hit your cranial unit or something?” she added, with a smirk.

“I’m fine, it’s just... complicated.”

“How about you two save this little chit-chat until after we’ve navigated several hundred tons of space cruisers containing all
